Well done to our newest members for surviving their first National MOD. The fact that the choir was unable to secure group accommodation together somewhat detracted from the usual enjoyable communial MOD experiance. Melvich Gaelic Choir took 3th place in the Puirt-a-beul and 4th equal in the Lorne Shield and 5th equal in the Ladies competitions. Congratulationsto Atomic Piseag and its conductor Raymond Bremner on winning the Town Ladies compitition.
Normal MGC Practice resumes on Thursday 18 in Melvich Primary School.
Reay with Strathy and Hallidale Church of Scotland hold their annual Songs of Praise Service on Sunday 14th August at 12 noon in Halladale. A buffet lunch will be served in Hallidale Hall. All choir members are warmly invited.
Choir's next appearance will be on Friday 12 August.
The BBC are recording a "Songs of Praise" programme from Pultenytown Church of Scotland in Wick. MGC has invited to take part. Recording will take place on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th August, with the programme scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday 11th September.
MGC held a coffee morning in Thurso Town Hall in conjunction with Mina Mackay School of Highland Dancing. The dancers danced, the choir sang then the choir sang while the dancers danced !. Sum raised approx £260. Many thanks to everyone who supported this event.
A series of Ceilidhs over the summer months with various local artists providing entertainment for visitors and locals alike on Friday nights in the British Leagion Hall. This was the choir's first appearance at Taste of Tartan with another one in August.
Social evening and BBQ at home of conductor Raymond Bremner on Saterday 9th July proved such a success it was decided to repeat the event the following week!.
Church of Scotland Archvarasdal Care Home near Reay, held its annual fundraising event. Entertainment was provided by 2nd Thurso Scout Pipe Band, The Occasionals and MGC.
MGC entered 3 competitions and won 2 of them, the puirt-a-beul and the Ladies compitition. The trophiy for the ladies compitition was a beautiful Caithness Glass Bowl which we were not permitted to take home lest it be damaged. The wooden base now takes pride of place on the mantlepiece instead. Prizes for enduring the hot and muggy conditions both inside and out ought to have been awarded to us and our fellow competitors from Aberdeen, dingwall and Edinburgh Saltire.
MGC won the open compitition and also the Caithness Presbytery Cup for Psalmody.
MGC led the singing at the Annual Thanksgiving Service at the RNMDSF at Scrabster. The service was conducted by Supt. Murray Campbell, address by Esme Duncan.
MGC had a clean sweep took winning all three of the competitions entered. Open competition: Duke and Dutchess of sutherland Cup. Puirt-a-beul: Melvich Gealic choir Cup. Ladies: Lawrence Kimball Challenge Cup.
MGC had an all day workshop in Victoria Hall, Reay.
Feis Ceilidh Strathy Hall
MGC took part in this event and met up with friends from other choirs including aberdeen, Lairg and Strah. They enjoyed a day of warm spring weather. A massed Choir entertained visitors to Inverewe Gardens in the afternoon.

Melvich Gaelic Choir took 4th place in the Puirt-a-beul and four part harmony competitions Melvich Ladies achieved 5th place.
1st place in the Psalmody competition and 1st place in the Open 4 Part Harmony.

3rd Lorn Shield, 2nd Puirt-a-beul - Aline MacKenzie Memorial Trophy, The Captain Angus Stewart Trophy for the highest marks in Music was awarded to Melvich Gaelic Choir, The Evelyn Huckbody Memorial Trophy for the highest marks in Music was awarded to Melvich Gaelic Choir, The Sandy Heron Cup for the highest marks in Music in A300, A305 and A306 was jointly awarded to Melvich Gaelic Choir and Còisir Sgìr a' Bhac.
2nd Lorn Shield, 1st Puirt-a-beul - Aline MacKenzie Memorial Trophy, 3rd Grampian Television Trophy (Melvich Gaelic Choir Ladies), The Calum Robertson Memorial Trophy for the highest marks in Gaelic was awarded to Melvich Gaelic Choir. The Sandy Heron Cup for the highest marks in Music in A300, A305 and A306 was jointly awarded to Còisir Ghàidhlig an t-Srath and Melvich Gaelic Choir.
